89-Year-Old Gunman Injures Five in Athens Shooting

(MENAFN) A series of brazen shooting attacks rattled the Greek capital Tuesday, leaving five people injured and an 89-year-old male suspect on the run after a sweeping rampage that struck two separate locations across Athens, a Greek national broadcaster reported.

The violence erupted shortly before 10:00 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) when the suspect stormed a social security institution building in the Petralona district of southwestern Athens. Witnesses say the elderly gunman made his way to the fourth floor before unleashing fire from a shotgun, striking one employee in the leg. The victim, whose condition was assessed as non-life-threatening, was swiftly transported to a central Athens hospital.

The suspect then allegedly relocated to the heart of the city, surfacing near the Magistrates' Court in central Athens. There, he ascended to the fourth floor of a nearby building and opened fire once more, wounding four additional people — all sustaining minor injuries. Before fleeing the scene, the gunman abandoned the shotgun, leaving investigators a critical piece of evidence.

Authorities identified the suspect as an 89-year-old man known in the areas where he operates, with reports indicating he has a history of psychiatric treatment — details that investigators are factoring into their pursuit.
